Pieces of Stone and Cloth is the latest collection from Julie Rainbow Carey. Composed of rocks and found materials, Carey’s work juxtaposes the timelessness of some natural elements, the inevitable decay of others and man’s unceasing efforts to contain them both.
These small, palm-sized works are hand-built by the artist using stones found in and around Marfa, Texas. Once a region of volcanic activity, the wide variety of colors and textures found in the rocky earth create the singly unique palette of the high desert landscape. Selections from this color palette are seen here in miniature, reflected in each composition.
Each work is sewn or assembled by hand using found materials, usually remnants of vintage fabrics that are equally unique and intriguing. Thread, yarn and metal mesh are also incorporated in some of the works. Structure and decoration are indistinguishable. Each work of this collection demonstrates a fine balance of directed composition and inherent beauty, foreground and background, shadow and color. Together or singly, they challenge the observer to examine these contrasting variables and their considerable dynamics, perhaps magnified by the absence of great physical size.
